Introduction

IFETEL: Instituto Federal de Telecomunicaciones Mexico Federal Telecommunications Research Institute.

In September 2013, Mexico’s former telecommunications regulatory agency, the Mexican Federal Telecommunications Commission (COFETEL) was replaced by the Mexican Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFETEL). Since then, the Mexican Federal Institute of Telecommunications (IFETEL) has been responsible for the testing and type approval procedures required for all imported equipment for Mexican telecommunications, and COFETEL no longer exists.

Standards

Others

IFETEL’s responsibilities will include

Define the telecommunications and broadcasting radio frequency bands that can be used by licensed operators;

Grant operating rights and approve any transfer of operating rights;

Issue or update telecommunications industry regulations;

Identify and regulate telecommunications monopolies.

For Mexico Telecom's type approval that has been completed by COFETEL, IFETEL will retain the same numbering system of the parent model and the same series of approval certificate numbers.

In the future, all products approved under the IFETEL system should be marked as follows:

For complete wireless products, mark "IFETEL: xxxxxxxxxxxxx";

For host products containing approved modules, mark "This product contains an Approved module, Model No. xxxx, IFETEL No. xxxxxxxxxxxxx" (This product contains approved modules, the model is xxxx, and the IFETEL approval number is xxxxxxxxxxxxx)

Mexico's NOM-121 requirements and tests for 900MHz, 2.4GHZ and 5GHz radio frequency equipment will remain unchanged until IFETEL releases new test procedures and requirements.
